Closing the gap between disability rights and disability reality
DPAN is a Disabled People's Organisation. We help disabled people understand and use their rights, connect people to the history and culture of the disabled people's movement, and help organisations make their disability policies work in practice.
Why DPAN exists
Disability rights in the UK have real legal foundations, won by decades of activism. The Equality Act protects the right to reasonable adjustments, to access, and to fair treatment in society.
But what the law promises and what happens day to day are often different. We call this the implementation gap: the distance between disability rights and disability reality.
National organisations work on policy. Charities give vital direct support. The implementation gap sits in between, where things fall through the cracks. That is where we work.
